March’s handle of $44.5 million and revenue of $5.59 both set monthly records for PA.

Rivers Casino has taken in 28% of all PA sports wagers since the state’s November launch.

HARRISBURG – Its Madness! Well, at least it was for the eight operating sportsbooks for the month of March in Pennsylvania.

In the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s monthly sports wagering report, Valley Forge Casino and Valley Forge Race And Sportsbook both reported for March – their first month’s operations. This assisted in bringing in over $44.5 million in sports wagers for the state as a whole.

Setting a new monthly handle record, January held the previous title at a $32 million handle. This 39% increase over the record helps put Pennsylvania closer to revenue projections.

Not only did the state see more money coming in, but they also fared much better than in previous months. The 12.3% hold surpassed the 8.1% and 6.1% hold levels for January and February, respectively.

With a gross revenue of $5.59 million, March now accounts for 43.8% of the total revenue for Pennsylvania sportsbooks since the launch in November 2018.

The previous record month (January) saw the books keep $2.6 million, which looks like small potatoes next to March’s robust report.

Let’s Break Down The Numbers

Rivers Casino continues to set the curve, as it has brought in the highest handle every month it has been in operation, except January.

The $11.9 million wagered at the Pittsburgh sportsbook helped them also notch the highest revenue amount for the state. Keeping $1.34 million, the state will receive over $450,000 from Rivers Casino for March alone.

Not far behind is Sugarhouse Casino, who has held the second-place handle total every month except January, when they slightly surpassed Rivers.

Sugarhouse’s $9.22 million accounted for 20.7% of the states handle and also provided the 22.4% of the combined sportsbooks revenue.

New to the game, FanDuel Sportsbook At Valley Forge launched in the middle of March but still held its own against the six previously operating books. The book brought in $2.04 million as a handle, which, if doubled (to portray a full month’s report) would position it as the fourth highest handle in the state.

However, those who wagered at FanDuel Sportsbook will need to do some further research, as the madness in March allowed the sportsbook to post a keep of 21.9%.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, The Book at Harrah’s Casino needs to do some research into their own betting lines. Their gamblers proved to have successful betting strategies, as the $326,752 in gross revenue did not help with The Book’s success.

Bringing in over $3.79 million this month, Harrah’s kept only 8.6% of all wagers.

It is no surprise that the sports betting handle in Pennsylvania keeps increasing, nor it is surprising that the gross revenue is following it.

For the state’s benefit, March’s monthly contribution of $1.87 million eclipsed both January and February’s combined tax contribution.

Mobile betting in Pennsylvania is still a few months away from their expected launch date but with this addition, we should see these March numbers look measly in comparison to future reports.

April’s report will post revenue numbers of a full month for both of the Valley Forge sportsbooks.

In future reports, we should also expect to see numbers for Mount Airy Casino and the Mohegan Sun Pocono, as they are just awaiting approval from the PGCB before their launches.

As of the last report, legal sports betting in Pennsylvania has seen a handle of $125.62 million, gross revenue reach $12.58 million, and the state receive $4.28 million in tax contributions.

Mt. Airy’s sports betting application is expected to be approved mid-May 2019.

With a large portion of the countries technology and services centered around convenience for the consumer, online sports betting apps are no exception. For Pennsylvania, a state with legal sports betting, online betting apps are the next step in ease of access for bettors in the area. Mt. Airy Casino Resort is hopping on the wagon by partnering with BetStars to offer online sports betting to the area through the BetStars app.

Mt. Airy Casino Resort is partnering with the Stars Group the parent company of PokerStars and BetStars, to use the BetStars app to provide online sports betting. The Casino Resort does not have enough of a reputation on their own, so they are using another company to help reach more bettors through online wagering.

Mt. Airy Casino Resort waited for a few months before applying for their license for sports betting in Pennsylvania in late March. The sports betting license is expected to be approved at the PA gaming control board meeting in mid-May of this year.

While there are plenty of other sports books in the Pennsylvania area that have applied for sports betting license for a sports gambling app, Mt. Airy will be among them soon enough. There are currently no online sports betting apps (aside from the offshore online ones) that are readily available in the state, but these apps are expected to launch sometime in April.

Mt. Airy’s betting app partnership may be a little late to the party by potentially coming in mid-May, but the casino resort will still take part in upcoming online sports betting app frenzy that will provide bettors with ease of access and more flexibility when betting. For avid visitors of the Mt. Airy Casino Resort, mid-May can’t come soon enough.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The addition of two casinos and a turf club in the month of January has the total handle for sports bets in Pennsylvania nearly doubled.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released their January Sports Wagering Report on Friday, which recorded the handle, revenue, and tax contributions for all six up and running sportsbooks in the state.

The report pulls from the previously established Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Dauphin, Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, and Sugarhouse Casino in Philadelphia. It also includes the partial operating months of Parx Casino, South Philadelphia Turf Club, and Harrah’s all of which are located in or outside of Philadelphia.

Breaking Down The Revenue and Sports Betting Numbers

The total handle for January 2019 was listed at $32 million, up from the $16.1 million wagered in December 2018.

Though the handle doubled, the gross revenue increased by roughly 30%. December saw its revenue just over $2 million while January is listed at just over $2.6 million.

This indicates that the state is winning and creating revenue but at a lower rate than in previous months. Either way, the 34% tax contribution from the books to the state was just under $900,000 for the month.

Total state tax contributions from November through January are just shy of $1.75 million. This number should rapidly as February will be the first month of having every sportsbook reporting for the full month.

Sports Betting By The Book

Sugarhouse Casino notched the highest handle for January, bringing in $10.8 million; however, they also earned the second-least gross revenue. Gamblers at Sugarhouse only allowed the casino to keep 9.5% of the handle as they took home over $10.7 million of the handle.

Sugarhouse is hoping for new clientele in February – perhaps the ones who ventured to Parx Casino after its January 10 opening. The Bucks County casino noted the third highest handle even though only being in operation for 2/3 of the month. However, of its nearly $5.4 million handle, the casino took in a revenue of over $1.1 million.

Not only was this the highest gross revenue number for the month for sports betting in Pennsylvania, but it was nearly half of the entire industry’s monthly gross revenue.

Also, it happened at a rate of 21.7% which means that much of every dollar wagered was chalked up as a loss for the gamblers.

For reference, Harrah’s revenue rate was the second-highest at 16.8% followed by the South Philadelphia Turf Club at 10.7%. It is not usual to see a percentage that high as the established Penn National was only at 5.9%.

Rivers Casino brought in the second most handle and gross revenue at $9.5 million and $850,000, respectively.

Penn National was the only sportsbook that saw a decrease in handle from December to January. Rivers and Sugarhouse casinos saw their handle nearly double in that same timeframe while Penn National only slightly declined.

It is believed that the handle will only slightly increase or remain the same until the state can develop a mobile betting platform that can be accessed all over the state.

Currently, there are no bills filed or discussions to do so, but it would provide an outlet for those located away from the main cities of the state.
