Each casino has already partnered with a sports betting provider.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has not indicated a deadline for their decision to approve the casinos.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Sports Betting in Pennsylvania has been expanding all year, with venues applying to host the activity in every corner of the state. Recently, two more casinos have applied to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) in order to do the same.

The Mohegan Sun Pocono and Mount Airy Casino submitted applications to the Board simultaneously in order to host their own land-based sportsbooks.

The gaming venues are located only 40 miles apart and neither location wanted to miss out on additional revenue or a new customer base.

In order to be approved by the PGCB, each casino will have to pay a license fee of $10 million dollars and pay the state a tax rate of 36% from their total sports betting revenue.

The PGCB has already authorized 8 casinos in the state of Pennsylvania to host their own land-based sportsbooks and has yet to deny any establishment that has applied. However, the state has not yet approved any online or mobile betting platforms.

The two applications submitted by the Mohegan Sun Pocono and Mount Airy Casino each come with an established sports wagering partner.

Even though the Mohegan Sun tribe is from Connecticut and their casino located in that state will be powered by Kambi, the Mohegan Sun Pocono in PA is going to work with the Kindred Group.

As for Mount Airy Casino, they already have established contractual relationships with The Stars Group as well as with 888 Holdings, who specializes in online gaming. One of them is expected to handle the casino sportsbook in the event that they are approved by the PGCB.

Future Outlook of PA Sports Betting:

Mount Airy is also looking to the future with this application. In their petition to the PGCB they wrote:

“It is anticipated that the addition of sports wagering will enhance the Mt. Airy facility, increasing it’s competitiveness in the regional gaming market by providing a significant amenity for gaming patrons. Mt. Airy will endeavor to market to the online sports wagering customers in order to drive additional traffic to the land-based facility.”

If they plan to use an online platform for the sole purpose of attracting in-person bets at their casino, they may take the route of Parx Casino.

Parx currently has a betslip builder that allows users to build their bets on their mobile device. The platform will show bettors how their bets would potentially pay out, but they would still need to be at the facility in order to finalize their wagers.

However, if Pennsylvania wants to compete with neighboring state New Jersey in terms of online sports betting revenue, they will need to approve a license for that soon.

According to the PGCB’s sports wagering revenue report, the month of February of this year only saw a little over $660,000 being given to the state from a total of all active PA sportsbooks.

In the same month, however, New Jersey was able to collect over $1,660,000 in sports wagering revenue from online platforms alone.

The state of Pennsylvania has seen continual growth this year in regards to its sports betting operations. The PGCB’s approach to first authorizing all possible land-based sportsbooks for sports betting in Pennsylvania before allowing online betting sites seems to be their goal.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Parx Casino, the most profitable casino in the state of Pennsylvania, is looking to expand its operations once more. Owners of the gaming destination have held a town meeting in order to garner local support, in the hopes to open a mini-casino in Shippensburg, PA.

Earlier this week, members of the community along with first responders met inside the Shippensburg University Conference Center in order to discuss details of the casino proposal as well as hear the public’s concerns over its construction.

According to the owners of Parx, the proposed mini-casino would house 500 slot machines, 40 electronic table games, as well as a bar and sportsbook. They also claim that the venue would bring 320 jobs to the area and approximately $2 million each year in additional tax revenue.

“It’s going to be quite a facility and ought to provide a good bit of economic generations within the community in the area,” said Doug Harbach, a representative of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB).

While this may be enough to sway some, opponents of the mini-casino are still concerned about the possible increase of patrons that could need emergency services in the small community.

Others believe that taxes should be acquired through other means besides gambling. It will be up to the PGCB and the owners of Parx to weigh-in the concerns of community members and ultimately make a final decision on whether or not to approve a new gaming facility.

If everything goes as Parx officials plan, Shippensburg could be home to the next venue fro sports betting in Pennsylvania by the end of 2020.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) met Wednesday to approve the sale of Presque Isle Downs to racing heavyweight Churchill Downs. This sale comes while Presque’s petition to offer sports wagering is currently being reviewed by the same agency.

Although the exact date of its sportsbook unveiling is hard to tell at this point, the approval is a step forward for the venue to become one of the next legal sports betting venues in PA.

“We hope to be on the February Docket of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to present our sports wagering format,” stated Kevin O’Sullivan, General Manager of Presque. “We’re looking at carving out space on the existing casino floor for a designated space.”

Along with renovations the owners also hope to offer online and mobile betting to all of its PA customers.

If the request is approved, the casino should be poised to start offering sports wagers soon after. Churchill Downs has proven experience in managing casinos with sportsbooks.

Why Churchill Is Equipped For Sports Betting In Pennsylvania

This would mark the first property owned by Churchill Downs in the Keystone State, but the company is no stranger when it comes to sports gambling operations. Two of the locations it owns in Mississippi have already offered the activity since it was first allowed last year.

More importantly, the company also owns the online betting platform TwinSpires.com. While this website is primarily used for legal horse race wagering, it is not hard to imagine them expanding to allow betting on traditional sports.

Why Churchill Downs Is Entering The PA Market

Last year Pennsylvania became the largest state to offer legal sports betting, besides of course Nevada. While many questioned the high price tag that comes with offering this gaming expansion, the numbers have proved to be worth it.

Last year, in just two weeks of Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook operations, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) showed more than half a million dollars in revenue on a $1.4 million handle.

Since then three other casinos have begun to accept sports wagers and more are looking to join in on the action. Pennsylvania sports betting laws required these establishments to pay a $10 million licensing fee and have their sportsbook operations ready within 60 days of approval.

Even though the short-term payment is hefty, the long-term value of offering PA sports betting is undeniable. Churchill and Presque realize this which is why they are hoping to start offering sports betting in Pennsylvania to their customers as soon as possible.

Even though sports betting in Pennsylvania is still relatively new, Parx Casino is ready to start 2019 by expanding its gaming operations to include it. The Parx casino sportsbook is set to have a soft launch next Tuesday in order to pass the state’s testing period. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has to approve their 48 hour testing period, and assuming that they will, the sportsbook should be fully operational in time for next weekend’s playoff matchups. But, this highly anticipated launch has been in the works for months now.

Who Is Operating The Sportsbook?

Back in November of 2018, Kambi announced that it would partner with Parx Casino and the South Philly Turf Club in order to operate sports betting at their locations. Even though Kambi is a European business, they have already established their footprint in the US sports gambling market.

SportsBettinginPennsylvania.com found that Kambi controls roughly 70% of New Jersey’s online sports betting industry and they have previously shown intent to expand their reach to other states. The sportsbook operator plans on bringing all the functionality they provide their New Jersey partners to the locations they partner within Pennsylvania.

What Kind of Sports Betting Is Parx Going To Be Offering?

Parx plans to unveil the same types of traditional sports betting options you’d normally associate with casinos in Las Vegas. They will have classic betting options such as moneylines, totals, and spreads. But, they will also provide opportunities for prop bets, teasers, and parlays. All these wager types can be used for the most popular American sports and plenty more.

Inside the casino, there will be 26 self-service betting kiosks set up in a temporary lounge. If it gets to be too crowded you don’t have to worry because the casino also plans on releasing their very own sports betting app with a live in-game betting feature included. Sports fans in the area are now hoping that the Eagles can stay alive in the playoffs and that the sportsbook will be fully operational in time to place wagers on their reigning super bowl champs.
